Salmezza

Panoramica

The small hamlet of Salmezza lies in a natural basin at around 1,000 metres above sea level, between Mount Podona and Mount Filaressa. It can be reached on foot via the ancient “Via Mercatorum,” a historic trade route used by merchants since the 13th century that once connected Nembro to Cornello dei Tasso in the Brembana Valley. In this hamlet there may once have been salt storage sites. Traditionally, the name Salmetia is linked to this activity, which likely served the needs of both the Seriana and Brembana valleys. Today, this ancient route can be followed using CAI trails 535 and 534, which from the centre of Nembro lead to the hamlet in about 1 hour and 30 minutes, with an elevation gain of approximately 600 metres. Salmezza is also known as the birthplace of the painter Enea Salmeggia, whose notable work “Madonna in trono col Bambino” is preserved at the Pinacoteca di Brera. Once in Salmezza—whether by car via Provincial Road 36 or along the many mountain trails—you will find a traditional restaurant where you can enjoy local Bergamo cuisine and game dishes.
